Spectrum - A brief history

Spectrum was founded in 1976. In 1989 we formed the core staff team. Currently the team is made up of Terry Cooper and Jenner Roth, founder directors, Maggie McKenzie, director, Paul Allsop, Gill Doust, Judy Hargreaves, Oriel Methuen, Julia Naish, Anna Patterson.

Spectrum Waiting room This team forms the nucleus of Spectrum today. Policy decisions regarding Spectrum practice and training are made by consensus within the staff team. A further twenty Spectrum-trained practitioners also practice in the building. These people make a major contribution to the work, the energy and the day-to-day running of Spectrum. The reason Spectrum is here today is because we value working as a team. Originally we formed Spectrum out of our desire to work together and not be isolated as professionals. We believe that people who work together are stronger, more effective and more resourceful.

Spectrum is unusual in being both a psychotherapy practice and a training centre: the training growing out of the clinical practice. We have blended these two areas of work to create a unique opportunity for people to grow personally and professionally and in the process we have created a community. A community is more than a social organisation, it is an attitude and an experience, it is a statement that people matter and can work best together for the benefit of the individual and the group as a whole and that both conserve the interests and the growth of the other.

Spectrum Garden In 1985 we formally launched the Spectrum training programme. Spectrum trained and accredited psychotherapists are listed on the UKCP register. The Spectrum Associated Centre’s network was formed in 1999 and Spectrum is an approved centre of the Oxford/Cambridge and Royal Society of Arts (OCR).
