Spectrum Incest Intervention Project
The Spectrum Incest Intervention Project was founded in 1986 as a study group and educational resource for people in the field of incestuous sexual abuse. Its development went on to include a counselling and information service providing counselling for both victims and perpetrators of incest. This was a pioneering step as, until then, counselling services had traditionally worked with either one or the other. Working in this way increased our potential to heal families who were trying to deal with these issues.
In 1996 an independent research project was launched to assess the effects of brief psychotherapy on women survivors who had been sexually abused within the family. All of the counsellors and therapists who participated in the project were humanistic in their therapeutic orientation. The results of this research, 'An Independent Evaluation Report To Determine The Effectiveness Of Time-Limited Therapy For Women Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse' can be viewed under Research Project on this website.
Over the sixteen successful and fulfilling years from 1986 to 2003 we met and fulfilled our original goal to provide support and education for people working in the field, to make others aware of the issues and to work with people affected by incestual relationships. We saw this field of specialisation become integrated into the mainstream of psychotherapy, counselling, social and police work. As a result of this integration, the consensus within the project was that our work as a project had been completed and that the time had come to make an ending and to acknowledge the work that had been done. So, it was with some sadness and great satisfaction that we marked the closure of the Spectrum Incest Intervention Project in 2003.
We continue to hold a deep appreciation for all the clients,
therapists, friends and patrons who were committed to this work
over the project's sixteen years. It was and remains a good
piece of work.
Patrons: Julie Christie, Elizabeth Jane Howard, Peter Gabriel, Dr. Richard Morrison, Dr. Sue Morrison, the late Robin Skynner, the late Sir Laurens van der Post.
