What’s Normal

Growing up around or having experience of a loved one with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, often means the focus and attention goes to them. For those of us dealing with the grief, anger and sense of isolation, there is little left over.

Left behind we can become relentlessly resourceful and highly functioning, avoiding shame at all costs and finding it hard to show or express vulnerability. Others withdraw doing their best to be invisible in the world. Either way, we become accustomed to keeping our own needs to a minimum, often with an unspoken fear of when will it be me?

This is an opportunity to tell our stories, share experiences and knowledge, connect with others and discover resources available within us. We will look at how to prioritise our own issues and develop self-care techniques for life as well as in crisis, how we create and maintain boundaries and feel more solid in how we talk about our experience.

Spaces are limited to six participants. The group meets fortnightly on Friday evenings and for one full Saturday each term. An initial commitment of one term is required.

The group leader is Natasha Curnock.

Summer 2017: Saturday, May 13, 10am-5pm and Friday evenings, May 26, June, 9, 23, July, 7, 21, August 4, 6.30-9.00pm.  

Autumn 2017: Saturday, September 16, 10am-5pm and Friday evenings, September 29, October 13, 27, November 10, 24, December 8, 6.30-9.00pm.

The fees are £360 for each term and are payable to Natasha Curnock at the start of the term.

Natasha is a graduate of the Spectrum Centre for Humanistic Psychotherapy training programme and is a practitioner there. She is BACP accredited and registered and has been a psychotherapist since 2006. Natasha has several family members with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and this group has come about as a result of her own experiences of this issue.
