Welcome to Spectrum Therapy
The programmes covered on this website and the private individual psychotherapy we provide emerge out of our personal search to bring about a deeper, more meaningful experience in our everyday life. Our commitment is to continue creating an honest, caring and informative environment that will enable and empower people to manage themselves and their relationships in new and more fulfilling ways.
Spectrum is integrative in its approach to psychotherapy. This
means we use a wide range of techniques and diagnostic models
from both traditional and modern psychotherapeutic disciplines.
No single therapeutic approach can encompass all the needs of
an individual, and so we prefer an open system of working, providing
a wide range of different focuses appropriate to people's needs.
It is part of our humanistic belief that therapy can be a humanising process for both the client and the therapist, and that the receptivity, emotional responsiveness and level of personal skill of the therapist is as relevant to the therapeutic relationship as their theoretical frame of reference or the techniques they employ. The techniques, important as they are, remain secondary to healthy contact and communication. We believe that therapy mirrors the aspect of each of us that moves towards well-being. We believe in the possibility of change. We believe in the viability and importance of multi-faceted roles and the complexity of our lives that is reflected in the therapeutic process. We believe therapy is an educational and political as well as a personal process, in which we learn about ourselves and the world and how to live with and in ourselves with greater skill and awareness and, ultimately, greater satisfaction.
As far as we know, Spectrum is the largest combined training
centre and practice committed specifically to the development
of humanistic psychology in the world and one of the most established.
As well as being a model for many organisations and centres,
Spectrum has influenced the work of thousands of professionals
in the field and is renowned for its tenacious pioneering spirit
in the area of standards and ethics. Spectrum is committed to
a policy of participation and involvement without prejudice
as to gender, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, disability
or background.
On this website we cover a variety of group formats and topics that deal with many personal and social issues. As well as our personal development programme, we offer individual private therapy, couples and family therapy, sexuality groups, private and group supervision and specialised events for professionals, including a five-year training programme in psychotherapy. We continue to offer counselling dealing with a variety of problems, as well as psychotherapy through our low-cost programme.
Spectrum offers a number of programmes to organisations in the voluntary, private and public sectors. In the last year, we have provided anger management programmes for workforces, carried out a number of team-building days for organisations, provided clinical supervision for groups of counsellors in various fields, and given redundancy counselling to individuals from public and private firms.
If you would like to talk with us about mounting one of our programmes we will be happy to discuss your requirements with you.
Spectrum has featured in various television, radio and video
productions and books and articles by staff members have been
published both nationally and internationally. Please feel free
to drop in during office hours, or come to an open evening to
meet with us in person, see the practice and get acquainted
with our work.
